Triple Detective #1 (Winter 1956)

With the release of the new series, three important stories are included in the first issue for the pulp fan. Norman Daniels’ “The Happiest Hour Murders” was written as a Phantom Detective entry in 1934, but rejected, and published later with all reference to the Phantom removed from the story. When Black Book Detective folded in 1953, Stewart Sterling’s “The Lady of Death” was left unpublished, and appeared later, with all traces of the Black Bat removed. These two stories have been restored to their original characters and published here for the first time. The Secret Agent “X” story, “The Stolen Formula” was originally written and published in Greece in 1950, and this is its first American publication in English.

Recently gotten this book and overall looks great. Haven’t had a change to read the stories, but look forward to.

This book is done up as an original pulp, with reprinted ads thru out. The intro article by Tom Johnson about these 3 stories was great, but I was a little confused by the info on the Black Bat.

One nit I had was that I was disappointed that the spine was blank. I was expected to see the title along the spine, along with the publisher, or something similiar to what the pulps did (as most were square bound).

The version of this from Lulu does have type on the spine. Amazon does not allow type on the spine for books under 128 pages.

  3. MBrown Says:

Hmmmm. Strange, as I’m pretty such I purchased this thru Lulu.

  4. MBrown Says:

Ok, I found that I had ordered it thru Amazon, along with “Gangland’s Doom”. That explains why both of those books didn’t have text on the spine. Annoying that Amazon does this.

Hey, I just came across all these Forums. Glad to see all this feedback. M. Brown, what’s the confusion on the Black Bat story, maybe I can clear it up for you?

Even though I semi retired at the end of December 2009, I hope to continue helping Matt with some of his projects at Altus Press occasionally. But with my age and health, I’ve got to slow down. Plus, I do want to catch up on some reading I have neglected for too long. Speaking of [...]
