Possible New Doc Savage Premium?
Anyone know what this is? I found it being used as a bookmark in one of my old Doc Savage pulps. It’s roughly business card-sized, 3.375″x1.75,” printed on thin, semi-glossy paper. It almost looks like a stamp. I thought it was cut from something else, but the trim lines are too perfect. Any ideas?

A Response to “At What Price”
I was recently informed of a post on newpulpfiction.com entitled Table Talk: At What Price? wherein one of the participants, Barry Reese, decided to passive-aggressively complain about the price point or our books, based mainly on conjecture and made-up quotes. I posted a response on that site, and I’ve also posted it here, as I ...

Proofreading?
First, thanks to everyone for your suggestions for future reprint books. I wish I could tackle them all, but I can tell you that several that were mentioned will happen. We’ve released a lot of great titles over the past for years, and in order to get them out in a timely manner I’ve had ...
Taking Your Suggestions!
We strive to put out a wide variety of books here at Altus Press. But the underlying direction of our releases comes down to one thing: putting out the books we’d like to have on my own bookshelf, and that no one else has published in a thorough way. We’ve got tons of new books ...

Wow, it’s been a pretty hectic last few months! If you’ve been reading Bill Thom’s Coming Attractions site, you’ve probably seen several new titles announced. I wanted to give everyone an update on where these books are & let you know when they should be available. Several people recommended the writings of Dan (Stay Away, ...
Retirement & Releases
Even though I semi retired at the end of December 2009, I hope to continue helping Matt with some of his projects at Altus Press occasionally. But with my age and health, I’ve got to slow down. Plus, I do want to catch up on some reading I have neglected for too long. Speaking of ...
New Titles Soon
Hi all- I usually pride myself on having several titles being released at the same time. I’ve had a handful in the construction stage for some time, and after a few technical delays, they are nearly ready for release. First, you’ll notice that Volume 3 of our complete reprinting of the Secret Agent “X” series ...
Tunnels & Death
A couple of items of interest this time around. First, “Alias Mr. Death” has been released from Altus Press. This is a landmark novel, being the blueprint for the future Phantom Detective, and a novel every pulp fan will have fun reading. This novel sets the tone not only for the Phantom Detective, but you’ll ...
Unsung Pulp
It’s been a few weeks since I’ve posted on here, but there’s plenty to talk about, what with PulpFest just concluding, etc. But In the past few weeks I’ve encountered some cool books which I think Altus Press fans would dig. The first of which is the magazine Pulpdom, published by Camille Cazedessus. Caz recently ...
Awards & Reviews
Pulpfest #1 is now over, and was a great success! There were over 350 attendees, plus 100 dealer’s tables, and lots of pulps. Bill Thom was the winner of the first Munsey Award, which replaces the Lamont Award. He wasn’t in attendance, so Matt Moring accepted for him Bill received the Echoes Award back in ...
Phantoms And Such
If you haven’t purchased a copy of The Phantom Detective Companion yet, you’re missing out on a great opportunity. Matt Moring has taken an old piece of research and turned it into a gem of a book. I remember vividly reading the Phantom Detective series when we were publishing Echoes, and furiously searching for missing ...

Show wrap-up
First, thanks for enduring the blog updates that sporadically came from my iPhone. It relied on a good signal, which didn’t occur in various parts of the Weston. The Saturday night auction was a marathon; several hundred lots in 4 hours. I personally don’t get the appeal of Weird Tales, but I could certainly appreciate ...
Friday night auction
Just got back from the Hamilton. auction, where many deals could be found. The highlights of the auction went cheaper than I expected: the Baumhoffer painting got $3500, and the Canadian Shadow #1 went for $1000. Overall, I’d say most lots went for roughly $100-200. The Hamilton art was sold for roughly $100-200 for b&w, ...
Out and about
To clarify, the Doc Savage #1 is coverless so it’s not pretty. Still it beats $3000 on a nice copy. I picked up the new Blood n Thunder and it looks great. Chris Kalb has completely redesigned it and it’s twice as thick. I bought a pile if Triple Detectives. I bet there are some ...
Waiting for the show to start
It’s funny watching the parking lot from my hotel room; I see lots of pulp swag getting hauled into the show.
Convention Morning
I’m still on east coast time, so being up at 6 for a show that begins at 12 might prove a bit boring for a few hours. But we’re heading off for some breakfast which will kill some time. I took a pic of the front of the con hallway; it’s before 9 and already ...
Registration Time
I just returned to my hotel room after visiting the Windy City hospitality suite. I apologize for the lackluster pic; it was pretty crowded and difficult to get a good shot. I did, however, get to meet Al Tonik in person after quite a few swapped emails. I brought my near-complete copy of The Phantom ...
We’ve arrived.
Ahhh… After a flight that was delayed an hour, we’re at the Lombard. Beautiful hotel, but not much of a view (see pic), I’m afraid. I believe there was another attendee checking in at the next desk over, so there must be more pulp people around. The weather’s clearing up and there’s not a lot ...
Live Blogging Starts April 30
Just to let everyone know, the blogging from the Windy City show begins (sporadically) on Thursday, April 30th. This is the first day attendees can register, so check back then!
Harold Ward is Coming!
As many people have noticed by now, Altus Press has worked out a deal to reprint the works of Harold Ward. Probably best known for his Doctor Death stories, his output spans many different genres, and is well worth owning. We’ll be putting these out soon, as taken directly from the original manuscripts. And many ...
Blood Moons
Unfortunately, there’s nothing new to report yet, but I’m still hoping that something will be released soon that I can comment on. In the meantime, here’s another Review, this one on a book I share with Barbara Custer of Night To Dawn. This contains my short novel of the Vietnam War, plus several of my ...
Will Murray’s Pulp Superhero Index is up
You may have noticed that in the header of this site is a link to an index. This is no ordinary index. This is the latest version of Will Murray’s Pulp Superhero Index. It’s a fantastic reference for anyone looking to track down every appearance of a character, or perhaps you’re curious to see who ...
Johnston McCulley
Johnston McCulley almost single-handedly created the costumed hero all by himself! Although many of his characters wore strange costumes: The Man In Purple, The Crimson Clown, The Green Ghost (early series), Thunderbolt, etc., The Mongoose, his most famous creation was that of Zorro, the masked avenger who rode the west righting wrongs and punishing evildoers. ...
Book Review
It’s been a month since I last posted a message in the Blog, so I thought I should put something in just to keep it alive. Unfortunately, with the end of the year, things slowed down a bit, and there really wasn’t much news. “The Day The Earth Stood Still” was released at the theaters, ...
Altus Press F.A.Q. Part 1
Wow, lots of posts today! I’ve tried to keep posts to a minimum, only posting when there’s something to post about. There’s a lot of unnecessary clutter out there on blogs; why add to it? But people have asked me about the books here and future plans, so I’ll dive in. Here are the most-frequently ...
Interested in a Giveaway?
While it’s probably too late now, for the past week I’ve been considering publishing a “giveaway” for customers. I like that publishers used to do such things, both as a thank-you to customers as well as an incentive to purchase something. Well, it’s never too late, I suppose, but to take advantage of the Christmas ...
On “Tarrano the Conqueror”
Oh, yes, I forgot to mention that other title that’s been two years in the making! I’m an admirer of Ray Cummings. I know he’s been branded a one-trick pony, but I think that’s unfair. The guy wrote in many genres, including the hero pulps (The Phantom Detective, and possibly more). He’s known for his ...
Latest Book Releases
As the year winds down, we’re frantically trying to wrap up several near-complete titles… one of which I’ve been toiling over for more than two years now! The first of which is The Pulp Adventures of The Hooded Detective, which collects for the first time all three pulp stories as published by Columbia in 1941-42. ...
Pulp Movies
A while back, I mentioned one of my all time favorite movies on my Yahoo Groups, “The Day The Earth Stood Still”; a science fiction flick from the 1950s. This was a morality movie, with a flying saucer landing in Washington D.C. An alien named Klaatu exits the craft, with a nine foot tall robot ...
Fading Shadows
FADING SHADOWS was a small press publishing house that began in June 1982 with the publication of ECHOES, the hobby magazine for the pulp enthusiast. The magazine lasted for 100 issues before becoming a newsletter, finally ceasing in December 2004. However, in June 1995, FADING SHADOWS branched out to fiction magazines with the first issue ...
On Our Limited Editions
I recently received an email from one of my customers asking: Can you explain how your limited editions work? Be happy to! As you may have noticed, we offer hardcover, limited editions of most of our books, and these are limited to 100 copies each. Once that threshold has been reached, the book is retired. ...
Bronze Shadows & The Moon Man
One of the first fanzines I ever read was Fred Cook’s BRONZE SHADOWS (Bronze for Doc Savage and Shadows for our hero, The Shadow), which ran for 15 issues, beginning with an undated Issue #1. Issue #2 was dated December 1965. Issue #15 was dated November 1968. Except for Issue #1, which was only a ...
Pulpcon 2.0
Thanks to the work of Mike Chomko and a handful of others, a new Pulpcon is coming in 2009. This is a good thing. While I’ve never attended a Pulpcon, I am looking forward to this one, now that it will be run right. I’ve thought about attening other, earlier Pulpcons. But there was always ...
Welcome to the new Altus Press
Matt writing; I hope you won’t mind a few hiccups while we’re rolling out our new website. We’ll be including regular blog posts so you’ll want to check back often.
An Introduction
My fascination with pulps began in the mid 1940s with my love for comic books, radio drama, and Saturday Matinee serials. As a young boy living in Wichita Falls, Texas, I was surrounded by theaters, bookracks and, of course, our family radio. It was during the time soldiers were returning from Europe to their hometowns, ...
