Secret Agent X: Master of Madness

by Stephen Payne

What is more important? Life—or lucre? Most of us would cast our vote in favor of life. But for one group of men, wealth possesses a far greater hold. Such a position becomes apparent when a New York publishing magnate dies in a horrible fit of madness. In response his surviving friends band together, vowing they would rather die than capitulate to his murderer. His name? The Fool. And Secret Agent X, man of a thousand faces, found that even he was not immune from the wiles of a madman.

Oh, wow, I read this back in the ’90s, and it was a blast! I’m tickled to see this new edition of “Master of Madness” from Altus Press. You know I’ll want a copy of this great Secret Agent X novel. Steve Payne is the natural successor to G.T. Fleming-Roberts and Secret Agent X author!

Double wow, Tom! Thanks for the kind words about this new edition of Master of Madness! I’m grateful to you for publishing the original text. And I’m just as grateful to Matt and Altus Press (including proofers and others) for bringing Master back into print.

Thought I would insert a little blurb for The Resurrection Ring to pique readers’ interest:

It was bad enough that a violent new crime wave swept over New York and Boston. It was far worse when police in both cities discovered who the criminals really were. All of them were murdered mobland bosses, victims of gangland hits. But how could that be? How could a band of corpses break death’s chains and commit new crimes, commit them, in fact, with impunity? And what was the criminals’ connection to Secret Agent X and his brave crew? Could Jim Hobart, X’s trusted lieutenant, have acted on an old grudge and sent one of these hoodlums to his grave? And could even the man of a thousand faces himself have a frightening connection to these villains and their nefarious leader? Secret Agent X must solve the mystery of the Resurrectionist, before that miscreant exposes the Agent’s greatest secret: his true identity!

I hope you’ll join me for this adventure, one I hope will be one of X’s greatest!

    Best,
    Steve Payne

I hope we see “Freezing Fiends” reprinted as well, along with Payne’s fourth SAX novel: “Resurrection Ring”
